Older Macs and iPhones May Lose Key Office 365 Functions Within Weeks – Gfaloe

If you need to edit Microsoft Office 2019 documents on a Mac, you’ll only have that ability until next month.

Starting on July 13, the Office 2019 suite for macOS – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote – will switch to a «reduced functionality mode» that blocks editing, saving or creating new files, while still permitting viewing and printing. The same limitation also applies to legacy iPhone and iPad apps, according to Microsoft.

The change comes because Microsoft ended official support for Office 2019 in October 2023, meaning the product no longer receives software or security updates.

Users of Microsoft 365 on newer, supported Office versions for macOS, as well as owners of the non‑subscription Office 2021, must upgrade before July to avoid the same restriction.

The root cause is an expiring security certificate that validates Office licenses. Microsoft renewed the certificate and patched newer Office builds to recognise it, but the 2019 Mac edition was left out. Windows versions of Office are not affected by this certificate.

Pulling the plug on Office 2019

Microsoft’s end‑of‑support notice cites a five‑year lifecycle for the suite. Office 2019 launched in September 2018, making it almost eight years old.

While a support window of that length is reasonable, the certificate issue isn’t a bug that can be fixed by borrowing code from newer releases. Office 2019, sold as a one‑time purchase, still functions otherwise.

The problem is that Microsoft will not issue an update to embed the renewed certificate. Expiring security certificates are a normal industry practice to reduce the risk of compromised cryptographic keys.

Some critics argue the deadline is self‑imposed, and Microsoft even removed an earlier online promise that the software would «continue to function.»

When asked for comment via email, a Microsoft spokesperson said: «Microsoft is not intentionally limiting or changing Office 2019; the product cannot receive the renewed certificate because no update path exists for an out‑of‑support product.»

The most recent full‑purchase Office version for Mac is Office 2024, which will remain supported. Its predecessor, Office 2021, will keep working but will enter end‑of‑support mode in October 2026.

Office 2019 belongs to a pre‑AI era of Microsoft products. Some users still cling to it for its straightforward word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools without the newer AI distractions.

If you decide to move away from Office 2019, you’ll need to run the License Removal Tool, open an Office app, then go to Help > Check for Updates to activate the new version.

As an alternative, Microsoft 365 can be accessed for free via the web.
