How Boston Dynamics’ Atlas Sees the World

Boston Dynamics has revealed new details about how its Atlas humanoid robot sees and interacts with the world around it.

The robot’s-eye view combines two-dimensional images captured by onboard cameras, position information from Atlas’ joints to orient itself in space, a 3D picture of its environment to gauge depth, as well as CAD files of objects the robot has been trained on to make real-time predictions about how an object is oriented in space.

Atlas consistently updates its perception of the world around it to react to changes in the environment (like when Boston Dynamics employees move things around or drop objects on the floor).
