Baldur’s Gate 3 TV Show Reportedly Coming to HBO, Game Developer Larian Not Involved

Baldur’s Gate 3 will be the next game to get the HBO treatment and become a streaming series, but the game’s developer Larian has said it’s not directly involved.

HBO has tapped The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin to create, write and executive-produce a live-action fantasy TV show, Deadline reports. But while The Last of Us is a faithful translation of the game, the Baldur’s Gate 3 show will be a new story featuring the game’s characters.

Swen Vincke, founder and CEO of Larian Studios, said in a post on X that the studio isn’t involved, but that he had spoken to Craig Mazin, as reported by Slashfilm.

The TV show will follow new, «starter» characters, according to Deadline, who encounter the now-powerful participants of the game in a continuation of the story. In a similar way, the Fallout TV show uses familiar characters from the game (such as Mr House) but is a completely new story.

HBO did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

The Baldur’s Gate show will be the second set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons after The Forgotten Realms, which is reportedly in development at Netflix.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was arguably the biggest game of 2023, picking up multiple awards. The roleplaying game made good use of the deep lore of the Forgotten Realms setting. As CNET’s Oscar Gonzalez wrote, the game follows a group of characters who have had parasites implanted in their brains, and they need to work together to remove them before they’re turned into mind flayers.

Meanwhile, Larian is currently working on a sequel to its other popular roleplaying series, Divinity.
