Apple Unveils M6 Mac Mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio to Enhance AI and Graphics Performance

Apple deviated from its standard announcement schedule to introduce updated Mac Mini and Mac Studio models featuring new M6 and M5 Ultra processors.

Alongside the new M6 Mac Mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio, Apple also introduced M5 Pro and M5 Max variants for the Mini and Studio respectively, aligning desktop offerings with MacBook Pro configurations. The physical designs remain unchanged, with performance enhancements stemming solely from the updated processors.

Pricing adjustments accompany the hardware upgrades. Except for the M5 Max Mac Studio, which remains at $2,499, base model prices for both systems have risen. The Mac Mini’s M6 version starts at $899, up $100, while the M5 Pro variant begins at $1,699. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio has increased by $200 to $5,499, following earlier price hikes in June.

The price hikes are not unexpected, given the ongoing ‘RAMageddon’ driven by component shortages. Semiconductor foundries are redirecting resources to the most profitable sectors, particularly AI-related data centers, causing supply chain pressures that ripple through electronics pricing.

Preorders are now available, though Apple’s lead times are extended. Shipments are expected to begin on Sept. 22, with the 512GB M5 Ultra Mac Studio following approximately a month later.

Enhanced M6 Processor in Mac Mini

The new M6 processor introduces significant improvements over its predecessor. Built using a 2nm process, it marks the first M-series chip to shrink from 3nm. This smaller process enables denser circuitry within the same die size, allowing for more cores and higher clock speeds without major design overhauls.

One notable upgrade is the Neural Engine, which doubles its core count to 32, a critical component for Apple Intelligence in macOS 27. This enhancement is vital for on-device AI tasks, as previous generations saw limited gains in Neural Engine performance.

The M6’s CPU architecture now mirrors the M5 Pro and Max, utilizing three core types (Super-Performance-Efficiency) instead of the previous two. Apple claims the additional GPU cores and accelerators will boost compute performance by 30%, aligning with expectations from memory bandwidth improvements.

M5 Ultra Upgrade for Mac Studio

The M5 Ultra, used in the Mac Studio, follows an every-other-generation update cycle. Unlike the M3 Ultra, it incorporates the latest M5 GPU architecture with on-core neural accelerators, enhancing both graphics and AI performance. The chip combines two M5 Max units, resulting in 80 GPU cores and 36 CPU cores, along with a 32-core Neural Engine.

Memory bandwidth has surged to 1.2TB/s, a significant leap from the M3 Ultra’s 813GB/s. This enables support for four 5K 120Hz displays, up from three. The M5 Ultra also maxes out at 512GB memory, though availability is delayed until late October.

Why the Timing Shift?

Apple’s early announcement deviates from its typical October/March cycle, possibly to justify price increases or address supply chain constraints. Component shortages and AI-focused production priorities may have accelerated the timeline, allowing Apple to secure silicon and inventory ahead of peak demand periods.

The M6’s release avoids overlapping with potential MacBook updates, simplifying logistics. Additionally, the Mac Mini’s affordability and AI capabilities position it as a key tool for developers and AI enthusiasts, while the M5 Ultra’s enhanced GPU architecture addresses pro graphics demands previously unmet by older Ultra chips.
