Acer Showcases Transformer-Like Design for Versatile Windows Handheld

While we typically consider Windows gaming handhelds to be primarily gaming-focused devices, they actually share many similarities with ultralight laptops: they run Windows, have built-in displays, and perform comparably thanks to mobile processors with integrated graphics. With today’s high prices for both handhelds and traditional computers, portable computing is becoming an even more attractive general-purpose option for gamers.

Yet when you want to play a game using a keyboard and mouse—or handle non-gaming tasks—the cumbersome process of attaching input devices or being restricted to locations where a dock is already set up often becomes necessary.

Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini concept approaches the challenge of making a handheld more versatile for general computing and console-style gaming through a Transformers-inspired design: it features a clamshell laptop layout with speakers positioned on either side of the display, but the 8-inch screen flips upward and the grips are placed on the back of the speakers, causing it to transform into a traditional handheld when closed.

Even though a mouse would still require connection, the integrated keyboard addresses the most awkward aspect of this unconventional form factor. As with any similar device, external monitors and other peripherals can also be connected.

The closest competitor I’ve encountered among Windows gaming handhelds is Lenovo’s Legion Go series (excluding the Legion Go Fold). However, in this context «close» simply means it includes a built-in kickstand that makes desktop usage somewhat easier.

Although specific technical specifications haven’t been disclosed—as the product isn’t a real release at this time—Acer states it will employ the same Intel G3 chips found in its Predator Atlas 8, announced at Computex 2026 in May and slated to ship later this month at an as-yet-unannounced price. The company recently launched another product line this week for the Predator Atlas 7, a slightly smaller, lighter—and presumably cheaper—7-inch model expected to ship around October or later in 2026.
